Exploring Fenwick Island, Delaware: A Celiac-Friendly Beach Adventure

Over the past three years, my boyfriend, Ethan, and I have spent a lot of time in Fenwick Island, Delaware, a special beach destination for his family. It’s become a favorite spot for us, a place where we can relax, enjoy the sun, and create lasting memories. When I was diagnosed with Celiac disease, I became extremely nervous about how this family tradition would quickly become more stress, having to search for a spot that would be fun and yummy for the family while ensuring I don’t get sick. Beach towns often don’t have the best reputation when it comes to gluten-free dining options, and the idea of finding safe places to eat while traveling made me a little anxious.

To my surprise, Fenwick Island turned out to be far more accommodating than I expected! While there certainly aren’t as many gluten-free options as I’d like in some parts of the country, there are some fantastic spots in the area that cater to people with dietary restrictions like mine. I’ve been able to enjoy delicious meals with Ethan and his family without feeling like I’m missing out.

Here are some of my favorite gluten-free-friendly spots in and around Fenwick Island that I highly recommend:

1. The Lobster Shanty

This quaint spot has been a consistent favorite, and while their gluten-free menu is a bit limited, it’s definitely worth the visit. The Lobster Shanty has the most amazing homemade gluten-free salad dressing—it’s so delicious I could practically drink it!

As an extra treat, I’ve added lobster to my salad a few times, and I can’t recommend it enough! It’s always cooked perfectly and tastes like something you’d get at a high-end restaurant. Another highlight? The lobster guacamole, which is also gluten free with chips straight from the bag (and not fried since they don’t have a dedicated fryer fyi).

The staff at The Lobster Shanty are incredibly knowledgeable about Celiac disease and cross-contamination. Every time I’ve been there, the servers have been more than happy to walk me through the menu, reassure me about safety, and make sure my meal is prepared correctly.

2. Matt's Fish Camp

Matt’s Fish Camp

A little less gluten-free-friendly than some other places, Matt’s Fish Camp does offer a separate gluten-free menu, which is always a good sign. Though there aren’t as many options, I’ve been able to enjoy their salad with chicken on top. The staff is very accommodating and willing to modify dishes to make them safe for Celiacs. There are also various locations throughout the area, which is a plus.

Even though the options are limited, they’ve always been eager to help me find something that works. If you’re in the mood for seafood, this place has a cozy atmosphere and serves some great dishes with kind service.

3. Papa Grande's Coastal Taqueria

Papa' Grande’s Costal Taqueria Steak Fajitas

Hands down, Papa Grande’s is my favorite gluten-free spot in Fenwick Island. This place is incredible, and they offer a gluten-free menu! The staff is fantastic—they are always so friendly, knowledgeable, and aware of the importance of avoiding cross-contact. Many of the servers even know someone with Celiac disease, which gives me an extra sense of reassurance.

My go-to dish here is the steak fajitas. While it isn’t on their gluten free menu, I’ve gone several times and worked with the staff to ensure my meal is safe. They’re cooked to perfection and are bursting with flavor. The sizzling platter comes with delicious peppers and corn tortillas wrapped up in tin foil. One thing to be careful about, though—the beans contain beer, so be sure to ask for no beans if you’re gluten-free! The staff is always diligent about letting me know this, but it’s always worth mentioning just in case they forget.

4. Warren's Station

Warren’s Station is a family favorite that offers something for everyone, including those with gluten sensitivities. They don’t have a gluten-free menu, but they do have an allergen booklet, showing the ingredient labels of their main items, that’s incredibly helpful.

I’ve had great success here with their rotisserie roasted chicken, which is made completely separately and safely. I usually also get a salad with chicken on top and work with the staff to make sure my meal is safe. The staff is very accommodating and always willing to help you navigate the menu to find a safe option. It’s a great casual spot for families with lots of different tastes and dietary needs.

5. Fisher's Popcorn

If you're in Fenwick Island, you absolutely can’t leave without trying Fisher’s Popcorn. This is gluten-free popcorn heaven! Whether you’re grabbing a bucket to take to the beach or enjoying it as a snack while strolling around town, Fisher’s Popcorn is a must-try. They offer delicious, fresh popcorn that’s completely gluten-free and a perfect treat for anyone, whether you have dietary restrictions or not. I could quite literally eat a whole bucket on my own - oops!

The SoDel Concepts Group: Great Selections for Celiac-Friendly Dining

For anyone who’s traveling to Fenwick Island with dietary restrictions, I highly recommend looking into the SoDelrestaurant group. Many of their restaurants, including Matt’s Fish Camp and Papa Grande's, are incredibly accommodating to people with gluten allergies. While I haven’t tried all the restaurants in the SoDel group yet, they would be my next best bets based on my experiences at the places I’ve visited.

Final Thoughts

Living with Celiac disease can be challenging, especially when you’re traveling to new places, but Fenwick Island has proven to be a surprisingly Celiac-friendly destination. These spots have allowed me to fully enjoy my time with Ethan and his family without worrying about my health. From The Lobster Shanty’s lobster salad to Papa Grande’s amazing steak fajitas, these restaurants have earned a spot on my list of go-to gluten-free spots for the area.

If you’re planning a trip to Fenwick Island and you have Celiac disease, don’t let food worries stop you from enjoying the beautiful beach town. With a little bit of research and some great local restaurants, you’ll be able to indulge in some delicious meals and make lasting memories without the stress.
