What Food I Pack When I’m Traveling with Celiac Disease: My Current Go-Tos

Since my celiac diagnosis, traveling has easily been one of the biggest challenges I have had to learn to navigate. One of the biggest things celiac takes away from us is the convenience of food - making it nearly impossible to grab a quick snack or meal at the airport or at any restaurant nearby without getting sick. To ensure I don’t get hangry on, what might already be a stressful day of traveling, I make sure to plan ahead. While it’s only been just about 2 years since my diagnosis, I have traveled quite enough to start getting a routine of my shelf-stable celiac safe foods before traveling. This list is going to keep evolving, and, when it does, I will do my best to come back and update. Without further ado, here are my top gluten free food travel essentials that are the perfect backups when celiac safe meals seem nowhere to be found.

1. Lotus Foods Rice Ramen Cups

When I’m on the go and need a quick, satisfying meal, Lotus Foods Rice Ramen cups are my top pick. These gluten-free ramen noodles are satisfying and incredibly easy to prepare—just add hot water, and you’ve got a meal in minute anywhere. Whether I’m at an airport lounge with limited options or just looking for a fast and tasty meal at home, these noodles always come through. They’re also lightweight and easy to carry, making them perfect for travel. They have a few flavors, but the Spicy Kimchi and Garlicky Veggie are my favorites

2. Tamari Soy Sauce Packets

This is an item I am going to start packing and adding into my travel routine, as I need a new sauce to add to my noodles to make it feel like a complete meal! This is especially important if you are going to Japan, just in case a restaurant you’re at does not offer GF soy sauce with your meal or if you’re nervous about ensuring it is actually the GF one - just pull this out of your pocket, and chef’s kiss!

3. Justin’s Almond Butter Packets

When hunger strikes and there’s no gluten-free option in sight, I turn to Justin’s Almond Butter Packets. They’re packed with protein and healthy fats, making them a filling and satisfying snack. I love how portable and mess-free they are—just rip open the packet and spread it on a rice cake, apple slices, or enjoy straight from the pouch! Almond butter and rice crackers are my go-to safety meal, and are quite literally my obsession breakfast - so this helps keep my meals fairly consistent while ensuring I have a safe, portable meal/snack on the go!

4. Lundberg Organic Rice Cakes (Thin Stackers)

Rice cakes are a perfect gluten-free base for snacks, and Lundberg’s Thin Stackers are my favorite. They’re light, crunchy, and come in a variety of flavors, but, best of all - they’re certified gluten free. I spread almond butter on them, top with honey if I have some handy, or just enjoy them as is. This is my daily go-to breakfast, so this meal/snack helps to ensure I am fed while providing consistency to something I eat normally. Added bonus: they don’t take up much space and don’t weigh too much!

5. Tru Fru Chocolate-Covered Fruit

When I’m craving something sweet while traveling, Tru Fru’s chocolate-covered fruit is my go-to. The combination of crunchy fruit and rich chocolate satisfies my sweet tooth, and best of all, it’s gluten-free. It’s the perfect treat to bring along when I want to indulge without the worry of hidden gluten. This is my favorite sweet treat while enjoying some relaxing time in the skies ✈️ , but it is also excellent for those times when everyone else on the trip can enjoy a glutenous sweet treat to help with the FOMO!

6. GoMacro MacroBars

GoMacro Bars are an absolute must-have when I’m on the move. They’re not only gluten-free but also vegan and organic, which makes them a nutritious option for long days of travel. They keep me full for hours (they are quite literally the only bars that actually keep me full!), and they help keep the hangry away in the knick of time! I personally love ‘Everlasting Joy’ and ‘Smooth Sanctuary.’
